There are many types of roads around the world. There are paths, there are lanes, there are country roads, and there are interstates. Which of these best describe your life? Personally I would love to say that mine is like a country road, slow and easy going. However, as long as I am in the working world mine is really the interstate.
The interstate is fast paced, limited access, and usually the most direct. But no matter what road we travel, there is always a crossroads or an exit ramp. When we get to those what do we do? I know when on the interstate I generally only get off when I reach my destination, need to refuel or defuel. This probably describes most of us that are living and working today. But what about those unplanned exits or crossroads? Do we always see what’s really there? Did we stop for gas and miss something? I mean, did God place someone or some situation that we should have been there for?
We try to plan our own lives, but God has other plans for our life. We may think that we are going down the right road, but is it God’s road for our life?
We plan the way we want to live,
but only God makes us able to live it. Proverbs 16:9
I was sitting in church the other day and we were singing a praise song and the lyrics struck a chord with me that no matter which road in life I take, it must follow God’s road for us, otherwise we will eventually get lost.
The road that God chooses for us is the only correct road and that can only be followed if we are disciplined enough to communicate with God on a routine basis. Just like when we need fuel for the automobile we need to refuel our spirit with God’s spirit to keep us going.
The road to life is a disciplined life;
ignore correction and you're lost for good. Proverbs 10:17
Are you trying to proceed down the same road as someone else? This may be fine in the world of business and to get ahead in this world, but is it the road that God has planned for you? Is this the right road for you? No one can answer that question except for you and God.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. 12 Then people who are not Christians will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
Scripture shows us a roadmap on how to live our lives. It should be easy to get on the right path, shouldn’t it? Yes it should, but how do we start? We start by praying that God would put our lives on the right road for Him and then we need to listen. That may not start out the way we thought, but eventually we will see the straight road before us. If in your heart you are sincere about going down the right road for God, He will put you on that road and will keep you there. You will see the rewards of following His road of life for you.
Psalm 66: 8-12 Bless our God, O peoples!
Give him a thunderous welcome!
Didn't he set us on the road to life?
Didn't he keep us out of the ditch?
He trained us first,
passed us like silver through refining fires,
Brought us into hardscrabble country,
pushed us to our very limit,
Road-tested us inside and out,
took us to hell and back;
Finally he brought us
to this well-watered place.
