Listen - did you hear that? This past Wednesday the morning was just a bit more vivid and lively. It all started when I was driving to the train station and was listening to Philips, Craig, and Dean and their song titled “Friend of God”. Really a good tune. So as I was riding in to Washington DC, in my usual seat, upper deck, water side, I saw the sun beginning to rise over the Potomac River. Really a typical sunrise, but this morning a little more vibrant than most. That’s the picture here.
I got off the train; still singing Friend of God, life in the city began to come alive. I stopped by my office for a few minutes before venturing out to an all day meeting. Ran into several people all who seemed to be cheerful.
Listen – did you hear that? As I was walking back out of the building I heard a street musician playing his trumpet over by the metro. Sounds of the city, I thought. What a glorious day. So as I was walking I kept thinking about sounds of the city. So I just began to listen a little more closely. Conversations of people walking and talking. Vehicle engines, motorcycles, a distant siren.
Listen – did you hear that? People standing at the metro listening to their personal music, more conversations, the sound of the approaching metro train, the brakes. The click clack of shoes on concrete, the slight breeze blowing between the buildings, more conversations, some in other languages.
Listen – did you hear that? Those are the sounds of God moving about in His world. God was talking to me this morning by using these sounds. What was He saying to me, do you ask? Well He was telling me to just enjoy the day. How do I know this?
Matthew 6:30-33 "If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”
Listen – Did you hear that? I am a friend of God, are you?
