How do you sing for God?

How do you sing for God?

How many songs from the past, I mean the 70’s, had Christianity overtones or even hinted at it? There were several that were hits on the pop charts. For example Norman Greenbaum had a big hit called Spirit in the Sky, 1969. Another one that I can readily recall was Signs, by Five Man Electrical Band. These were actually pop songs that had direct or indirect connotations to Christianity or Jesus. Elvis Presley recorded many songs that were inspired by Gospel Music. One of his biggest hits was He Touched Me, written by Bill Gaither. “He Touched Me” was an entire album dedicated to Gospel Music, recorded in 1972. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote Jesus Christ Superstar as a conceptual album that eventually turned into a “rock opera”, which won 7 Tony Awards!

Why do I bring this up? God likes it when we sing to him, whether it is in the form of the classic Hymns, contemporary Christian Music, Christian Rap, or even Christian Rock. God sees all as praises to His name.

Psalm 150
1 Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.

One of the greatest modern day Christian song writers was Rich Mullins who grew up as a Quaker, spent his entire life writing and singing songs to God. Arguably his biggest hit was Awesome God. Most Christian recording artists do so to make a living. Rich did the same, however; the profits from his tours and the sale of each album went to his church, which divided it up, paid Mullins the average salary in the U.S. for that year, and gave the rest to charity. Rich died at an early age in a car wreck.

How do you sing for God? Do you write songs? Do you sing to Him? Do you listen to Christian Music? If you do not sing for God, then I urge you to tune your heart the right station. That station would be:

2 Samuel 22:2-4 He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent men you save me.
4 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
