Honor Your Father and Mother....

This Sunday is the day set aside to honor our Mother. The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. Mother's Day continues to this day to be one of the commercially most successful U.S. occasions. According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother's Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States.

Enough said about the day Mother’s Day. We should be honoring her every day. We have been given instructions from God in the 5th Commandment.

Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

The thing that I remember the most, from my childhood, is that my mother was fun loving and nurturing. She used to sled ride with us, play waffle ball in the yard, and still be there to clean off my cuts and scrapes when I fell off my bike. Yes she also punished me when I strayed from the center of the path, but in a kind and gentle way. That’s maybe not how I remembered it when it was happening, but I have learned that over the years.

I was one of those children that the parents decided that the mother’s place was in the home to raise the children. So, she was there when I came home from school every day. She was there when my father was deployed to Vietnam for a whole year. She was there when I decided to enlist into the military. She was there when I got married and there when our children were born. She is still here today supporting me in all that I do.

I have heard others say that a Mother is the name of God in the lips and hearts of children. A mother's love is instinctual, unconditional, and forever. Mother is the bank where we deposit all our hurts and worries.

When we get in trouble, who is the first one we ask for forgiveness? When you think of someone having a tattoo, at least my generation, that tattoo would be a heart with Mom inside. [Side note: there is a tattoo parlor in Fredericksburg, VA that is called “Sorry Mom.” Is that not irony?]

Today I have 3 mothers in my life. I have my mother, my wife, the mother of my children, and my daughter, the mother of my grandson. To watch each of them care/nurture for their children and families is a strength that must only come from God, because men do not have half the patience that I see in them. I see the love in their eyes, the love in their hearts, and the love of being a mother. I am very blessed to have these women in my life to love me, nurture me, and support me.

I believe that any mom sacrifice anything to take care of their child and do what is best for them. Would you be willing to give up your child for their betterment? We see this everyday as well, when young mothers give their child up for adoption so they can have a better life than they can provide.

How many of you are familiar with the story of Hannah in the Bible? 1 Samuel 1 is her story. Her story is one where she desperately wanted to have a child but her womb was closed. So she prayed. 1 Samuel 1:10-11 - In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. 11 And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."

The Lord remembered her prayer; she became pregnant and bore a son. Hannah weaned her son, followed her commitment to God, and gave her son to the church! You have to realize how important this was back then. The son took care and provided for his mother, especially when the husband was gone. So this was her security and life insurance. But yet she gave her son to God, because He gave him to her. It was not because she could not provide or would not provide, she had made a promise to God, and she was keeping that promise.

So honor your mother today, tomorrow, and all the days to come.

Happy Mother’s Day – Mom – Jayne – Heather. I love you each of you in a different way, but do not forget that I do love you forever.
