Cool Water

I enjoy listening to most kinds of music and was raised on Country/Western music. I was recently listening to Eddy Arnold, circa 1961 and he was singing Cool Water. This man has a powerful singing voice. The song was written by Bob Nolan in 1936 and recorded by many Country/Western artists, including Marty Robbins and Hank Williams. The song is about a man and his mule, Dan, and a mirage in the desert.

The lyrics go like this:

All day I've faced a barren waste
Without the taste of water, cool water
Old Dan and I with throats burnt dry
And souls that cry for water, cool clear water.

Chorus: Keep a movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan
He's a devil not a man and he spreads the burning sand, with water
Dan can you see that big green tree where the water's running free
And it's waitin' there for me and you?

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water, cool water
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
And carry on to water, cool, clear, water

The shadows sway and seem to say
Tonight we pray for water, cool, water
And way up there He'll hear our prayer
And show us where there's water, cool, clear, water.

To me the lyrics of the song jump right out as a man looking for something more than water. And I thought this could be about a man looking for God. So I thought which verse(s) in the Bible have I heard something like this? Well three books of the Bible immediately jumped right out.

Psalm 42:1-3
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?  My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

Are you thirsty? Are you wondering through a desert looking for water? Are you thirsty? Are you tired and weary from your journey? Has the weight of temptation and sin brought you down? Have the complications of life worn you out. Do you have more troubles than you can count? Are you tired? Are you weary? Are you thirsty?

John 4: 13-14
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The message of Jesus is COME. Come and I will give you rest. Come and drink from me, the fountain of living water. Come be refreshed, renewed, and restored. His message today is come. Today if you are thirsty, come. Come, just as you are. All those who are thirsty and all those who are tired, come and drink deeply.

John 7: 37-38
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."
