Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that honors soldiers and is observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.
Memorial Day often marks the start of the summer vacation season, and Labor Day its end.
Begun as a ritual of remembrance and reconciliation after the civil war, by the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as ordinary people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had served in the military or not.
Just like all other holidays around the world, it has become commercialized. Memorial Day has just become a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, and trips to the beach.
John 15: 11-15"I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I'm no longer calling you servants because servants don't understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I've named you friends because I've let you in on everything I've heard from the Father.
Memorial Day is about remembering those that ‘Put their life on the line for your friends’. Please do not forget Jesus of Nazareth? He actually put His life on the line for all mankind. This was the ultimate sacrifice and He did it without lifting a finger to fight back.
Having served in the United States military, I respect those that went into battle for us and died to defend what we believe in. Our immediate family currently has 2 men serving in the military. One is an Air Force firefighter and the other is a Navy diver. I want to publicly acknowledge their service to our country.
Thank you, Stephen McNulty and Cole Copley.
I know there are others out there serving as well, please post a comment on your family members that are serving.
