Procrastination
Ecclesiastes 11:4 He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap. Or in other words, He who waits for perfect conditions will never get anything done.
Procrastination refers to the act of putting off actions or tasks to a later time. Procrastination may result in stress, a sense of guilt and crisis, severe loss of personal productivity, as well as social disapproval for not meeting responsibilities or commitments.
Proverbs 18:9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.
Did you ever notice that when you keep putting off something you dread doing; it looms larger and larger in front of you? That's because when we procrastinate, we allow feelings of dread to control us. Over time, the sense that we're losing control can grow increasingly stronger and overwhelm us.
When we put off a task or obligation, we don't improve our situation and, in fact, we usually make it worse. Procrastination never simplifies our lives, even though it may appear that way sometimes, but it actually complicates our lives and increases our stress levels.
When I'm faced with a task I'm really dreading, I try to focus on how good I'm going to feel after it's done, rather than on the task itself. Often that helps me get started, and getting started is usually the hardest part. That's why it's so important to ask the Lord to help us take that first step.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
If we remember that God has given us a Spirit of discipline and that self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, we'll be better equipped to resist the enemy's attempts to make us believe that we're incapable of following through.
Proverbs 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you”— when you already have it with you.
God doesn't want us putting off doing good to others. When His Spirit prompts us, our timely response can make a world of difference in someone else's life.
While procrastination robs us of blessings, God promises us great rewards for practicing diligence.
Proverbs 10:4 Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
Proverbs 12:24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.
Proverbs 13:4 A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
From now on, think of procrastinating as putting off your blessings, and resist it with the Holy Spirit power that abides in you. Then go ahead and take that first step toward the victory and success that God has in store for you!
I ask you, have you been procrastinating about trusting Jesus to be the Lord of your life? Have you been delaying taking that first step of gaining eternal life? Don’t put off any longer that small voice in your head or that heart ache. That voice and that heartache is God reaching out to you. Reach out to Him now and ask Him to lead your life, to help you with you tasks that seem impossible. Because only He can fulfill that nagging feeling.
