Power of the Tongue

James1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

We know that some Christians let their tongues get out of control. Whether they be Christians you know in your everyday life, or televangelist you greatly admire. We see in our devotion scriptures that James warns us about the use of our tongue. Loving the Lord is a responsibility and not something which we should take for granted. When we hear a brother or sister say something we know is wrong, we need to pray for that person. If possible we need to let that person know what they said is wrong.

James3:5-6,8 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

James tells us, that even as Christians our tongue is a world of iniquity, that it can defile the whole body. Our tongue cannot be tamed; it's an uncontrollable evil. We need to be conscience of everything we say. We need to let our hearts be guided by the Holy Spirit, not by what goes on around us, or world events. This does not only go for Christians that we know, but also for our televangelist. Our tongues can be a deadly poison that can ruin a person's life, or set off a chain of events that could have dire consequences.

Peter says for one to love life and see good days, that it's important that we control our tongue from speaking things contrary to what the Lord teaches. If you express your opinion about someone, whether you are doing it in front of one person, or on television in front of millions of people, let your opinion be in a Godly form. Not in such a way where you're going to bring shame to the body of Christ.

Peter 3:10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.”

Heavenly Father, we thank you that we are able to express our opinions freely. Help us to also remember that we have a responsibility to those who do not know Christ. Whether they are our neighbor next door, or a world leader. Father, help us to tame our tongues and to be careful about expressing our personal opinions that hurt other people. In Jesus' name we ask, amen.
