Week five
The Motivational Factor
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3
What motivates you in the work you do for Christ? Why do you do what you do? Is it out of a sense of obligation? Do you believe it is required of you because you are a child of God? Or is it from your drive to succeed, to be somebody?
The apostle Paul said that even if we give everything we have to the poor and even if our bodies are to be burned, it profits nothing if we don’t have love.
“Nothing?” we ask. “You mean all those times I gave to the local mission and worked in the nursery at church amount to nothing just because I don’t have love?”
That’s right. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
In Jesus’ life and words we see the only real reason for service: …I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10 His whole mission was accomplished because God so loved us.
True love gives. The only work, the only sacrifice acceptable to God is the one given out of love. Any other is tainted with the smell of self-service and love, the Bible teaches us, “is not self seeking” 1 Corinthians 13:5
Jesus revealed service as the path to greatness. As you look back over this last 5 weeks, what are some of the examples of where you shined the light for Jesus?
Have you served any angels this week? When? How does that make you feel?
What will you do, from this point forward, to serve Christ by serving others?
Father, you are the source of the love I share with others. I look to you to fill me with your pure love so that I may love what you love.
